Srinagar: For the Dragon boat open selection trials conducted by J&K State Sports Council, around 200 players from all over J&K turned up at Water Sports Centre Nigeen here on Monday.
The selection trials were conducted to select J&K team for the junior, senior 9th National Dragon Boat Championship-2020 for men and women. The championship is scheduled to be held at Bilawal Lake Indore from April 28 to May 1.
The trials saw overwhelming response from players who had come from far flung areas of Bandipora, Shopian, Pulwama , Kulgam apart from Srinagar and other areas.
“It is new beginning in the water sports arena of J&K as we are now seeing players coming from all over J&K. In past majority of the players for the water sports used to come from Dal Lake and adjoining areas. However, that has now changed with water sports activity taking place all over J&K including Jammu region,” said J&K State Sports Council Water Sports incharge Bilquis Mir.
The Dragon boat trials were held in senior and junior categories in both male and female sections and after the selection process selected players are likely to go through coaching camp.
“With so many players turning up for the trials we are seeing new talent. Already some unknown players have got better off known established players. They have done better than some known faces and it is good thing for the development of water sports in J&K,” she added.
