Abdur Rehman announces international retirement

CricketAbdur Rehman announces international retirement
Pakistan’s left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman has announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday (October 10). While he has exited the international scene, Rehman will continue to play domestic cricket.Abdur Rehman

Rehman is best known for his heroics in the 2012 series against England in the UAE in which Pakistan registered a whitewash victory. Rehman ended with 19 wickets and played ideal foil to Saeed Ajmal as the duo spun a web around the English batsmen.

The Sialkot-born spinner made his international debut in 2006 during the home ODIs against West Indies. As a spinner who depended primarily on accuracy from a largely flatter trajectory, Rehman made his foray into Test cricket the following year, against South Africa at home.

Rehman’s Test career began with twin four-wicket hauls on debut and ended as the highest wicket-taker for Pakistan in that series. However, he had to wait for another three years before playing his next red-ball encounter in international cricket.

A giant in the domestic circuit of Pakistan with a tally of over 900 scalps across formats, Rehman’s persistence saw him recalled in 2010. Since then, he was a regular starter till the 2014 tour of Sri Lanka after which he got dropped. He had also played quite a few limited-overs games, especially in ODIs where he was a restrictive spinner.

Rehman featured in the 2011 World Cup where he performed efficiently but was axed for the knockout games. Rehman hasn’t represented Pakistan since 2014 and stiff competition for the spinners’ slot left him on the fringes.
