Srinagar: The Junior cricket championship launched by Delhi Public School (DPS) along with J&K State Sports Council is going on in full swing across valley with reports of age and other discrepancy also surfacing at the same time.

The event is being held in various blocks of the valley and in each block teams compete against each other in Under-17 age group. The magnitude and reach of the event is such that the blatant age violations other discrepancies are overlooked.

One such blatant age violation was witnessed in Block Narbal in which winning side, Kanihama was seen having including number of overage players.

The final of the Narbal Block in which eight teams participated saw 8 teams participating. The final was played on Monday between Kanihma-XI and Soziyat CC in which Kanihama emerged as winner. The captain of the Kanihama Waheed Ahmad received the winning memento and cash prize.

However as the event concluded it has emerged that the skipper of the winning side Waheed Ahmad is way above then the allowed Under-17 age category. It has also emerged that the incharge of the block is brother of the same player and has violated all the rules and regulations while conducting the event.

“It was big opportunity for us to prove our talent. However with these kinds of age violations that has been allowed by the event incharge is clear discrimination with players like me. How can we expect to win against a team that has got members with average age of 23 years. In the event we were defeated by same team,” said player of one of the competing team.

Another player said that he came to know about the age violations after checking the background of some of the players.

“While playing match it seemed that some of the players are overage but we could do nothing at that moment. After that we checked background of some of the players and came to know they are way above then Under-17 age category. One of the main examples is of Kanihama captain Waheed Ahmad who is professional cyclist and plays for Celestial Buds team and has represented State Cycling in Under-23 category. I believe he has been allowed by the event organizer despite knowing everything because he is his brother,” he said.

Players said that age violations are not the only thing that has been happening in the event as there are other things also that take sheen off the event.

“The age violations are only tip of ice berg. Then event carries prize money at every level. We have noticed wrong umpiring decisions and it seems that is being done line with event officials in order to share the prize money,” said a player.

The players have now appealed DPS organizers and Sports Council to look into the matter so that deserving players and teams get justice.

“It is just one example and there can be many such. DPS and Sports Council should keep close watch on the officials who conduct event at local level,” players added.
