CricketKl Rahul makes biggest donation for treatment of ailing former cricketer

KL Rahul made a heart-winning gesture as he came forward with a generous donation for ailing former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin who continues to battle grave injuries after a horrific accident in December last year.

The whole cricket fraternity united to help Martin, who had injured his lungs in a life-threatening accident and was on ventilator support in a Baroda hospital. The likes of Zaheer Khan, Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri among others contributed in funds to get the ailing former Baroda stalwart back on his feet. BCCI also sanctioned an aide worth Rs 5 lakh, while reigning Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings donated Rs 3 lakhs for his treatment. Krunal Pandya, who is currently playing against New Zealand in the T20I series, also made a commendable effort by sending a bank cheque to the family and asking them to put any amount they want.

However, it has been learnt that Rahul has left everyone behind in providing the monetary help to the family and according to a report in Mumbai Mirror, has made the largest individual donation to the family.

The Karnataka batsman, who was suspended after his controversial appearance on chat show Koffee With Karan alongside teammate Hardik Pandya, has embarked on a redemption journey and will be captaining India A against England Lion in the ongoing Test series.

Martin’s family confirmed to the leading newspaper that Rahul’s donation was the most by anyone, while also adding that the cricketer’s team have asked the family to not disclose the amount. Martin’s wife revealed that Rahul’s team contacted them to ask for the amount and the funds were transferred on the same day.

“They asked about our immediate requirement and the money was transferred into our account the same day,” Marin’s wife Khyati was quoted as saying in Mumbai Mirror.

Martin, a right-hand batsman, played ten ODIs for India between 1999 and 2001 after making his international debut under Ganguly’s captaincy. Due to staggering hospital bills, his wife had written to the BCCI requesting for help after which the whole cricket fraternity came together to the aide and generously contributed. Martin is still in the hospital but is likely to be discharged in a few weeks.

“A big thanks to Rahul and everyone who has helped,” he said from his hospital bed, as quoted by Mumbai Mirror.

Rahul and Pandya were banned after their crass comments on the show, which received huge outrage on social media from various section of the society.

However, the suspension was duo was lifted by the BCCI within two weeks pending the appointment of an ombudsman in the case. While Pandya joined the Indian team for the ongoing series against New Zealand, Rahul was inducted in India A squad.
