Leicestershire secure Mohammad Abbas’s return in 2019

Leicestershire have signed Mohammad Abbas for a second summer as their overseas player, after the Pakistan seamer enjoyed a prolific debut season in county cricket.

Abbas claimed 50 wickets at 17.72 in Division Two of the Championship, including a haul of 10 for 52 in his final game, against Durham. Leicestershire finished a respectable fifth in the table – their highest position since 2010 – and have agreed a deal for Abbas to return in 2019, when he will also be available to play in the Royal London Cup.Mohammad Abbas

He was awarded his county cap in September, having featured in ten Championship matches either side of Pakistan’s Tests against England and Ireland. He also played nine times in the Vitality Blast, taking seven wickets.

“Mo has been an absolute class act this year,” Leicestershire’s head coach, Paul Nixon, said. “His bowling has been outstanding, constantly asking the batsmen questions by beating the edge on both sides. He is world-class; a humble man who is a brilliant role model.

“Even when Mo was away taking wickets for Pakistan earlier this year, he kept in touch and wished us well before matches. He has played a huge role in our success this season. We were absolutely delighted to award Mo with his county cap recently, and it is great that he will be returning next season.”

Abbas, who was Man of the Series against England as Pakistan drew 1-1, has taken 42 wickets in his eight Test appearances to date. He will be in action again next month, when Pakistan host Australia for a two-Test series in the UAE.

With Pakistan turning their focus towards the build up to the 2019 World Cup, however, they currently have no Tests scheduled between February and October, when they will tour Sri Lanka, meaning Abbas is likely to be available to play a full season at Leicestershire.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Leicestershire County Cricket Club,” Abbas said. “Everybody has made me and my family feel very welcome. I have relished the chance to be a senior bowler, and I am looking forward to coming back next year.”
