Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan all-rounder, is set to feature in the 2018 edition of England’s domestic T20 competition after signing up to play for Leicestershire as their overseas player, the club announced on Wednesday (March 7). Nabi is the second overseas player in the Leicestershire set-up, with the Grace Road-based club having earlier roped in Pakistan’s Muhammad Abbas.Mohammad Nabi

The 33-year-old Nabi brings to the table an experience of 160 T20 matches in which he has scored 2191 runs at a strike rate of close to 140, with six half-centuries under his belt. The right-arm offspinner has also picked up 182 wickets at 20.58 with four four-wicket hauls. He becomes the second Afghanistan player to sign up for T20 Blast, with Sussex having signed Rashid Khan earlier.

Speaking about his upcoming stint with Leicestershire, Nabi said: “I have heard a lot of good things about the Foxes. I am looking forward to working with Paul Nixon and joining a professional and ambitious county with a good track record in T20.”

Nixon, the Leicestershire head coach, said Nabi will be a good fit in the team with his all-round skills. “I know all about Mohammad Nabi’s qualities in the game. Hecan make a huge impact in our middle order and is an off-break bowler who operates with great control and skill. Nabi has a brilliant white ball record for Afghanistan and in T20 competitions around the world. He is exactly the type of player that we were looking for and is somebody who will fit in beautifully here.”

Nabi has featured in various T20 leagues across the globe. He became the first Afghanistan player to be sold in the Indian Premier League when Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him ahead of the 10th season. He will return for his second season with the same franchise after being bought back at the 2018 player auction.

He plies his trade for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League and for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League. Nabi has played for three franchises in the Bangladesh Premier League since the 2013 season – Sylhet Royals (2013), Chittagong Vikings (2016) and Comilla Victorians (2017-present).
