CricketNepal’s Rohit Paudel breaks Sachin Tendulkar, Shahid Afridi’s record, becomes youngest male half-centurion

Nepal batsman Rohit Paudel, with his 55-run knock off 58 deliveries against UAE on Saturday, became the youngest ever male player in the history of cricket to score an international half-century. Paul, who is 16 years and 146 days old, broke the previous records of Sachin Tendulkar (in Tests) and Shahid Afridi (in ODIs) to become the youngest ever to hit a half-century. The half-century was Paudel’s maiden in his three-match young international career as he announced himself to the world in some fashion.

Previously, Tendulkar had held the record of youngest player to hit a half-century in Test cricket after he played a 59-run knock against Pakistan when he was aged 16 years and 213 days. Whereas in ODIs, Afridi held the record, when he was aged 16 years and 217 days as he smashed a 37-ball century against Sri Lanka. Paudel’s knock powered Nepal to 242-9 in 50 overs against UAE at the ICC Academy in Dubai as the visitors went on to defeat the hosts by a mammoth 145 runs.
However, Paudel didn’t break the overall record for youngest half-centurion in International cricket as the record currently stands with South Africa Women’s cricketer Johmari Logtenburg, who had scored an ODI fifty at the age of 14.
Earlier, Paudel made the headlines when he smashed the highly-rated Indian seamer Kamlesh Nagarkoti for 24-runs in an over in an Under-19 match in 2016.

Paudel made his debut in August 2018 at the age of 15 years and 335 days, which made him the fourth-youngest male cricketer to do so.

Meanwhile, the three-match ODI series between Nepal and UAE is locked at 1-1 after the hosts won the series opener by three wickets on Friday. The third and final ODI between Nepal and UAE will be played on Monday at the ICC Academy in Dubai.
