Srinagar: Secretary to Government , Youth Services and Sports Department, J&K Sarmad Hafeez on Monday flagged off SnowShoe team for the participation in World SnowShoe Championship-2020.

The nine-member SnowShoe team who all hail from Kashmir would be representing India in the World SnowShoe championship-2020 in Myoko Japan. The championship is organized by World SnowShoe Federation (WSSF) and Indian team is being fielded by SnowShoe Federation of India that is based in Gulmarg.

While flagging off team from the Banquet Hall here on Monday Sarmad Hafeez termed it a great new activity that has got immense potential in the J&K. He wished members of the contingent luck and hoped that they will shine during the championship.

“SnowShoe is relatively new sports and activity in Kashmir but is too much popular in USA and European Countries. It is not just a sport but everyday activity in these Countries during winter months. We in J&K have got lot of places were SnowShoe activity and sports events can be held,” Sarmad said.

On the occasion he revealed that J&K would be hosting first Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg and during that event SnowShoe would be introduced as new major activity in the Country.

“We will be hosting first ever Khelo India Games in the month of March which will see hundreds of players from all over India coming to Gulmarg. As we have got to know about SnowShoe run now, we will push for the inclusion of this activity in the event as well. This will be major attractions during the event,” he said.

The nine-member team include two students Zain Ali and Ayaan Bin Shahnaz from Burn Hall Higher Secondary Institute and their instructor Feroz Ahmad. It also includes other four senior athletes Gulzar Ahmad, Mushtaq Bashir, Zulfqar and Muzamil Hussain. Apart from that they have two officials as well.

Among others present on the occasion were Conservator Forests, SSFI President Mir Mudassar, Principal Burn Hall School Sebestian Nagathungal, veteran sportspersons Nisar Hussain, Rouf Ahmed and parents of the players.

“We are happy to see Sarmad Hafeez flagging off the team. It has boosted the morale of the players and we are confident they will do well during the event. Previously we have fielded our teams twice in Italy, Spain and USA. We have also conducted multiple events at Gulmarg over the years,” Mir Mudassar said.

“During the event team would be highlighting Kashmir tourism. Though we have applied for sponsorship with Tourism department but we are yet to get that. We will still be on forefront to promote Kashmir tourism during the event that will see athletes from around 24 Countries participating,” he added.

Team left from Srinagar on Monday and would be leaving from Delhi on Wednesday. The championship in Myoko is being held from February 14 to 16.
