Australia’s World Cup preparations didnt go on expected lines as in the warm-up game against West Indies, their star opener Usman Khawaja suffered a nasty knock to the head and was taken to hospital for scans on his jaw.
Khawaja was struck by a ball from his former Sydney Thunder teammate Andre Russell in the second over of Australia’s run chase in a practice match at Southampton’s Nursery Ground.
Khawaja indicated to an area on the right side of his head after the blow and looked in some discomfort as he was escorted off the field by team doctor, Cricket.Com.Au reported.
He was sent for scans soon after and is not expected to play any further part in the match.
Khawaja’s presence at the top of the order had seen David Warner pushed down to No.3, but if Khawaja is sidelined due to the injury, it could pave the way for Warner to return to the opening spot he occupied before his ban.
