In the event around 400 athletes from around 16 different Countries from different parts of the World are participating. The event started with parade of nation’s that passed through main town of Saranac with all the locals cheering for the participating athletes from the sidelines. It was followed by a ceremony at town hall in which hosts Saranac Lake presented different cultural and musical events showing the diversity of the Village and the people who live there.

During inaugural function, Mayor Clyde Rabideau who is chairman of the organizing committee welcomed the athletes and the delegates for the event. He said that sudden change in temperature has forced organizers to shift race from main town to nearby mountain but it has not dampened the atmosphere that World championship brings in.

“The nature forced us to shift race to nearby Dewey Mountain but that doesn’t mean it has lost its relevance. There is going to be huge crowd from all over Saranac Lake at the Mountain to cheer up participants. To make race course ready hundreds of volunteers have turned up with their shovels. We have been getting trucks loaded with snow from Lake Placid,” he said.

Tanveer Hussain who will be taking part in the second World Snowshoe Championship said,

“I would not have been able to compete in the event if it would not have been the people of Saranac Lake who supported us on the visa issue. It is all because of their support and love that we have been able to get Visa. Since arriving here we are like celebrities signing autographs, meeting people and every inviting us for a dinner and lunch. This community is great and they have opened their hearts for us”.

About the parade and competition, he said, “Last year it was dream come true in Italy to take part in Olympic type parade of Nations ceremony. This time it has even got bigger with thousands of people assembling on streets welcoming the players and cheering for them”.

“Due to this visa issue I had to stay in New Delhi for around three weeks and it affected little bit of training. However, still I will try my best to better from previous record in the competition. In the championship there are some great athletes going to take part and it is never going to be easy task to beat them,” he said.

Tanveer thanked J&K Bank and J&K State Sports Council for supporting him for the participating in the event.

‘I am thankful to J&K bank for allowing me to take part in this event and then J&K State Sports Council supported me financially by sponsoring me,” he said.
