Srinagar: It has been around decade and Kashmir University sports department continues to be headed by the non professional director after the retirement of former Director, Dr Khursheed A Tarzan.Kashmir University

Dr Tarzan was the last professional sports knowing person who headed the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports department, Kashmir University.

After his retirement, Vice Chancellor appointed Dr Nissar who is from mathematics department as the director sports and he was followed after couple of years by Bashir Ahmad who was from History department. Bashir headed department for around three years and then Vice-Chancellor again gave helm of the department to Dr Nisar who currently is its incharge head.

Kashmir University’s sports department has two major sections. One deals with Physical Education in which sports background students are imparted education in BPeD and MPeD while as other is concerned with conducting of sports events.

Both the important departments are headed by non professional who has no basic knowledge of sport.

“No one was fully satisfied with the working of Dr Tarzan but it is also fact he was the last one who ran department with full dedication and professionalism. It was during his time that department was bustling with activities and grounds were best,” said a player who study in KU.

“Look at the condition of the field, they are in worst shape of their history. It is despite the fact that the staff and ground staff is more than double what Dr Tarzan had its disposal. He had few coaches, few staff and little number of grounds man but still grounds in better condition and activities were happening multi folds,” said another player.

A senior player who is aware about the working of department said that non professional Director runs as per the directions of his close officials of department.

“Activities are happening at almost no rate, grounds are in miserable conditions but the number of staff is more than double. Coaches go on their private assignments every now and then and there is no one to scrutinize their work. Other staff comes and goes according to their will. More importantly coaches get salary for doing nothing. They have to conduct two tournaments and supervise one national trip in year and they fail even in that,” he added.

It is high time that Ku gives serious thought to towards the working of the department and gives its charge to any professional.
