Boycott, 77, had the procedure on 27 June and spent 10 days in hospital before going home.

“The surgeon says the operation was a success and has now allowed him home to recover from invasive surgery,” his daughter Emma said in a statement posted on his behalf on social media.

Boycott, who is a commentator with BBC, will not be calling the start of the England v India Tests, but will be back for the third Test in Nottingham on 18 August, she added.

Support poured in from well-wishers, with Boycott continuing to keep up the banter on his social feed taking his daughter’s help to type.

The Yorkshire stalwart scored 8114 runs in 108 Tests for his country, retiring as the leading run-scorer.

In 2002, he also fought throat cancer, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.
