Cuttack, June 13: Chasing 149 for the win, Heinrich Klassen took the game away from India with a 46-ball 81 as South Africa romped home with four wickets to spare to go 2-0 up in Cuttack.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s magical figures of 4/13 in four overs was not enough to stop South Africa from taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Led by Heinrich Klaasen’s fiery fifty, the Proteas chased down the total with 10 balls to spare.

South Africa win by 4 wickets and take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Earlier, South Africa bowlers bowled brilliantly to restrict India to 148/6, with only Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Dinesh Karthik making sizable contributions for the hosts.

South Africa win the toss

For the second game in a row, Temba Bavuma called it right at the toss and elected to field first. Despite the loss in the first game, India remained unchanged. South Africa, though, made two changes – Quinton de Kock (hand injury) and Tristan Stubbs made way for Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen.

Kishan goes big after early wicket

India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad in the very first over of the innings, who was late on the drive and ended up slicing the ball to the backward point. The first three overs only fetched 12 runs before Ishan Kishan welcomed Anrich Nortje into the attack with two sixes in his over.

He smashed a four and a six in the last two overs of the Powerplay to take India’s score to 42/1. He scored yet another boundary off Nortje but the pacer had the last laugh with the short ball sending the southpaw back.

Shreyas Iyer, who was quiet after walking in at No.3, smashed Tabraiz Shamsi for a six and a four off consecutive balls. India, though, kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to gather steam in the middle overs.

Rishabh Pant holed out in the deep trying to attack Keshav Maharaj off the very first ball of his spell. Hardik Pandya couldn’t replicate his heroics from the first game, as he was castled by Wayne Parnell coming around the wicket at an angle. Iyer fell in the very next over for a 35-ball 40, reducing India to 99/5 at the end of 14 overs.

Dinesh Karthik puts on a show

Dinesh Karthik played his first T20I in three years last game but didn’t get much time in the middle. Today, Karthik had over six overs to make a mark and he did not disappoint the packed crowd in Cuttack.

He had to bide his time with wickets falling and was 8 from 14 balls going into the last two overs. In the final two, he smashed two sixes and two fours to finish on 30* off 21, propelling India to a fighting total of 148/6.

Defending just 149, India needed wickets early on and their veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered. He went through Hendricks’ gate in the very first over. The decision to send Dwaine Pretorius did not reap the same reward as the first game, as he was deceived by the knuckleball.

In the last over of the Powerplay, Bhuvneshwar picked his third wicket in as many overs with the nip-backer to dismiss the dangerous Rassie van der Dussen. India kept the lid on scoring even after the fielding restrictions were lifted, reducing the Proteas to just 36/3 after the Powerplay.

The required run-rate was touching 10 an over when Heinrich Klaasen decided to take the attack to India. The carnage began when he plundered Yuzvendra Chahal for a four and six. He dished out similar treatment to Hardik, with two fours in his second over.

He smashed Axar Patel out of the attack in his very first over, accumulating 19 runs which included a six and two fours. The wicket of Temba Bavuma for 35 did nothing to slow South Africa down as Klaasen’s fireworks had brought the required rate down.

Klaasen got to his fifty off just 32 balls and finished the game off in a hurry thereafter. With 34 needed off 30, the decision to bowl Chahal backfired on India as David Miller and Klaasen smoked the wrists-spinner for three sixes.

By the time the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Harshal Patel for 81, South Africa only needed five from the last three overs. Bhuvi got one more wicket to complete his four-for before Miller hit the winning runs to take the visitors home with ten balls and four wickets to spare.
