National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday slammed action by some youth—allegedly close to right-wing organizations in Jammu University—who stopped a game of Intra-University tournament over alleged “disrespect of national anthem” by players from Kashmir division.Dr FarooqTalking to Greater Kashmir, Farooq strongly condemned the action, saying such unfortunate incidents are “happening in ‘new India’ of Narendra Modi.”

“We strongly condemn this action that seems to be yet another attempt to divide people and fuel tension in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

About 40 youth, allegedly close to right-wing organizations, stormed a ground at JU and forcibly stopped a football match that was to be played between teams of Islamic University of Science and Technology Kashmir and host Jammu University.

The protesters alleged that few players from Kashmir region “didn’t pay due respect by standing when national anthem was played.” Kashmiri players, on the other hand, refuted the allegations and said they were harassed unnecessarily by students close to right-wing organizations.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Farooq said upcoming bypolls are a test of our integrity as a people. He paid obeisance and offered afternoon prayers at Dargah Hazratbal here.
