LocalMir scripts clean sweep against Sri Lanka

Sana Mir’s second consecutive four-wicket haul helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the third One-Day International at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday (March 24). It is Pakistan’s second consecutive whitewash over Sri Lanka.Sana Mir

Batting first for the third match in a row in the series, Pakistan had contribution from all their top-order batters to post 215 for 9. In reply, Sri Lanka lost their first four wickets at the same score of 49 and never recovered from there. They were eventually bowled out for 107 in 41.3 overs.

With four wins now, with one having come against New Zealand, Pakistan have consolidated their third position on the ICC Women’s Championship table with eight points.

Pakistan lost Muneeba Ali in the eighth over of their innings, but Nahida Khan, who top scored with 46, and Javeria Khan had a partnership of 63 runs. Shashikala Siriwardene dismissed Javeria in the 22nd over, and not long after that Inoka Ranaweera trapped Nahida in front of the wicket. Siriwardene then dismissed Bismah Maroof, as Pakistan became 142 for 4 in 34 overs.

It fell upon Nida Dar to resurrect the innings with a 26-ball 20. She got good support from Sidra Ameen (21) and Mir (16). Diana Baig hit a six in the final over to take Pakistan to 215.

Sri Lanka started the chase well with an opening stand of 49 before Nashra Sandhu bowled Chamari Polgampola with the first ball of the 14th over. Sana Mir dismissed Nipuni Hansika and Rebeca Vandort in the next over, and Sandhu then had Chamari Athapaththu caught and bowled as Sri Lanka lost four wickets in a space of 12 balls without adding a run.

That effectively ended the chase and wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Mir having Siriwardene and Hasini Perera lbw.

Mir finished with figures of 10-3-27-4, while Sandhu had returns of 8.3-2-18-3. Maroof and Dar were the other successful bowlers. Pakistan bowled a total of eight maiden overs.

As many as seven Sri Lankan batters were dismissed for single-digit scores.

It is only for the fifth time that Pakistan registered a win with a margin of 100 or more runs.

The two teams will now face off in three Twenty20 Internationals in Colombo, with the first match scheduled at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground on March 28.
