Srinagar: IPL 2023 got off to a thrilling start with seasoned India pacer Mohammad Shami shattering the stumps of New Zealand opener Devon Conway in the inaugural match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings at Ahmedabad.

With that Shami joined an elite list of bowlers to take 100 wickets in the Indian Premier League.

In the third over of the GT innings, Mohammed Shami bowled Devon Conway to inflict major damage on the Super Kings. The stumps were rattled as Kiwi batter had to walk back.

Mohammed Shami became the 19th bowler and 14th Indian in the history of the Indian Premier League. His Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra also happens to be in that list with 106 wickets from 88 matches between 2008 and 2017.

Mohammed Shami played for Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings before moving to GT when the team made its debut in the tournament last year.

Mohammed Shami needed 94 matches to get to the milestone.

Having made his IPL debut in 2013, Shami played just 3 matches that summer and picked 1 wicket. In 2014, he played 12 matches but managed only 7 wickets. The next two years were no better with an identical haul of 5 matches from 8 matches.

After another ordinary season in 2018, Mohammed Shami picked 19 wickets in 2019, 20 wickets in 2020, 19 in 2021 and 20 in 2022. In fact, Shami was one of the stars for Gujarat Titans as they went on to win the IPL in their first season.
