Kings XI Punjab on Monday named R Ashwin as their new skipper ahead of 11th edition of the Indian Premier League. With this, Ashwin has now become the tenth cricketer to lead the franchise. Glenn Maxwell (2017), Murali Vijay (2016), David Miller (2016), George Bailey (2014, 015), David Hussey (2012, 2013), Adam Gilchrist (2011, 2012), Mahela Jayawardene (2010), Kumar Sangakkara (2009) and Yuvraj Singh (2008) have led the franchise in the past. At the IPL 2018 auctions, KXIP were involved in several intense bidding wars as owners of all eight franchises splurged money at the two-day event. Preity Zinta and Virender Sehwag formed a deadly combo and also bought some crucial players in R Ashwin (7.6 crore), KL Rahul (11 cr), Chris Gayle (2 cr), Yuvraj Singh (2 crore).
Under Glenn Maxwell’s captaincy, despite getting off to a good start in 2017, KXIP lost the plot in the middle of the tournament where they lost four consecutive matches in a row. By the end of 14 matches, KXIP found themselves at fifth position with seven wins and as many losses. Their campaign ended on a horrible note after they were bundled out for just 73 runs in their last match against Rising Pune Supergiant.
Soon after the auctions, KXIP had released a list of 5 players who were in the race to become the team’s next captain.
