Sumiya Kousar of Mountaineering Association of J&K has successfully completed her adventurous and arduous eco-cycling Expedition at the capital city of Nepal in the Himalayan region.
Sumaya hailing from village Shajroo Tehsil Mahore, is the student of Bachelor of Arts Semester 4th in Government College for Women Parade Jammu. She is an adventurous, energetic and brave girl who has earlier this year participated in climbing competition in Bengluru and Delhi and won silver medal. The ten days cycling expedition with a group of six adventurous cyclists was flagged off by Nizamuddin a great cyclist, from India Gate on First March 2017, which culminated at Kathmandu on 10th of March covering 1140kms long flinty way. Sumaya is the only girl from Jammu and Kashmir among the 5 girls selected across the country for this prestigious expedition.
The expedition was organized by “Stand with Girls”, an NGO which has conceived this expedition to promote and foster the spirit of adventure and camaraderie especially among the girls who have been scary through the ages to participate in such stiff events. It is the first time that such a cycling expedition exclusively for girls has been organized.
Before commencing this great expedition Sumaya, took training in undulating terrain of Maldevta on the out skirts of Dehra Dun Utra khand.
Immediately after her selection in the cycling expedition Sumiya had met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who encouraged her to do her best in the expedition and bring laurels to the state. Chief Minister also promised her all possible help in the shape of equipment and financial assistance. However, Sumiya has been sponsored by Government College for Women Parade, Jammu in which she is studying.
The other guys who accompanied  Sumaya from different geographical locations- Varsha Sasane from Maharashtra, Amita Das Chowdhary from West Bengal, Sangeet Samad from Jharkhand and Vikram Singh Panchal from Haryana.
Team Leader Vikram Singh asserted that the expedition was being organized with expedition motto of “Stand with Girls”. He said the expedition aimed to sensitize the society about the importance to save girls and give them proper environment.
Negotiating the tough Himalayas and romancing the landscape, these guys reached Kathmandu on 15 March 2017as per already slated programme.
Speaking on her experience during the tour, Miss Sumaya said that transiting into Nepal, it was new way of life, entirely different culture and glimpse of Mountain peaks, the terrain was arduous. There was spectacular canvas of sights. Rugged and dry at some places, lush green at others, the landscape looks like paintings that can’t be translated into words.
Highlighting various aspects of the Cycle Yatra a girl cyclist said, “The expedition was to create awareness about women empowerment and environment consciousness.
