Srinagar: England all-rounder Moeen Ali was at his absolute best on Wednesday as the left-hander slammed a 16-ball fifty against South Africa in the first T20I at Bristol.

Moeen Ali’s 16-ball fifty is the fastest half-century in T20I for England.

Moeen, together with Jonny Bairstow, had extracted 33 runs from one of Andile Phehlukwayo’s overs in the match.

With the help of 2 fours and 6 mighty sixes, Moeen registered his name in the history books as he recorded a fifty in the least amount of balls consumed for an Englishman in T20 international cricket.

Batting first, England went bonkers with the bat despite the early dismissals of Jason Roy and Jos Buttler. Dawid Malan (43 off 23), Jonny Bairstow (90 off 53) and Moeen (52 off 18) were the pick of the batters as the hosts put 234 runs on the board in 20 overs.

In reply, South Africa saw useful knocks from Reeza Hendricks (57 off 33) and Tristan Stubbs (72 off 28) but in the end, they could only score 193 runs in 20 overs.

Moeen Ali was named the Player of the Match for his quick-fire half-century and for picking the important wicket of Reeza Hendricks.

“It was a nice time to go in. I as a left-hander went in to keep the right-left combo. It is not easy to score on this pitch. I back myself against the spinners. Jonny is so strong and powerful. We bat well together. It is a great wicket. I try to keep my shape and hit it,” Moeen said after the game.
