CricketWilliamson heroics in vain as Chennai breach Hyderabad's fortress

aptain Kane Williamson’s valiant knock went in vain as Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to Chennai Super Kings by 4 runs in the first match of the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

Chasing 183 for victory, Sunrisers rode on Williamson’s 84 off 51 balls and Yusuf Pathan’s quickfire 45 off 27 balls to reach agonisingly close to the target but the run chase fell apart once these two departed in the 18th and 19th over respectively.Chennai

Hyderabad eventually managed to reach 178 for 6 in 20 overs to suffer just their second loss at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium since they came into the IPL in 2012.

This was also Williamson’s second successive loss as captain this season after the hammering they suffered against Kings XI Punjab in their last game in Mohali.
For CSK, it was fast bowler Deepak Chahar who did the bulk of the damage with three wickets for 15 runs in the powerplay while Karn Sharma, Dwayne Bravo and Shardul Thakur pitched in with a wicket each.

The win helped MS Dhoni’s team climb to the top of the table where they are level on 8 points with Kings XI but are ahead owing to a superior net run rate. Kolkata Knight Riders occupy third position followed by Williamson’s team.

Earlier, Chennai rode on superb knocks from Amabati Rayudu and Suresh Raina to post 182 for 3 after they lost the toss and were put into bat first.

Rayudu hammered 79 from 37 balls while Raina scored an unbeaten 54 off 43 balls and the duo stitched together a 112-run partnership for the third wicket to propel Chennai to a challenging total. Dhoni also contributed with a quickfire 25 off 12 balls to add to his team’s total.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan were the only two bowlers to take a wicket each for Hyderabad while Ryudu was run out.

Chennai will next face Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on April 25 while Hyderabad will take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium on April 24.
