LocalWinter Games Association to conduct State Winter Games

A high level meeting was convened by Winter Games Association of J&K (WGAJK) today here in Srinagar to decide different issues related to the promotion of winter sports in the state. With a view to provide more opportunities to winter sports athletes of the state to compete with each other and to give them more exposures the WGAJK decided to organize state snow sports championships in the name and style “State Winter Games” at Gulmarg  soon. Competitions will be held in different snow based Olympic and non-Olympics events like Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, Snowboarding, Ski-mountaineering and recently introduced Snow kayaking in different categories.

The Games will be held under the aegis of J&K State Sports Council and in association with J&K Cable Car Corporation, Tourism Deptt and Gulmarg Development Authority. The association has decided that the teams for 2018 national junior and senior championships will be selected amongst the best performers in the proposed Games who will be given rigorous coaching well before the national competitions. The meeting also tried to find out possibilities to host the National Junior Alpine Ski Championship at Gulmarg in first week of April this year. This Championship was earlier scheduled to be held at Auli in Uttrakhand but due to scarcity of snow in that region it was cancelled. It was decided that the championship will be organized here on the condition that Winter Games Federation of India waves off the condition of using FIS specified equipment by the participating athletes. The meeting made a request to the President WGFI to look into the mater. Notably the WGAJK has already selected state contingent of 39 athletes for competing in different categories. All stakeholders including Tourism Deptt, High Altitude Warfare School, Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, J&K Cable Car Corporation, State Sports Council and Gulmarg Development Authority assured their help to make the endeavor a success. The WGAJK shall now make formal request to WGFI to allot the Championship to J&K. It is expected that 150 boys and girls from different states and other units may take part including, J&K, HP, Uttrakhand, UP, Delhi, Punjab, IIS&M and JIM etc. The meeting was presided over by MLA Gulmarg and among others Director Tourism, Col Vivek Jalla of HAWS, Principal IIS&M, CEO-GDA, GM-Gondola, Asstt Director Tourism Gulmarg, Asstt Director Youth Services, Sports Officer-J&K Sports Council, General Secretary and Treasurer of WGAJK
